Sunrise island visits are usually not worth it.

Probably not. Most islands accessible by ferry or bridge don’t run first trips until at least 8 or 9 AM, especially if it’s a seasonal route. Sunrise is rarely compatible with the schedule.

If you’re thinking of a specific place like the Apostle Islands or the San Juans, check the park website—some have early kayak launches or private charters, but the standard public access won’t get you there in time. Even if you could, dawn on an island is cold, windy, and often foggy. The Instagram photos hide the shivering.

Your money and sleep are better spent on a mid-morning arrival with a thermos of coffee and an actual path visible.
