Surface texture matters more for optical sensors.

It does, and in a way that might surprise you.

Optical sensors (LED) need surface texture to see movement. They work by taking microscopic photos of the surface, and those photos need enough contrast to track. A cloth pad with visible weave? Perfect. A glossy desk or glass surface? The sensor sees basically a mirror — cursor jumps or stops entirely.

Laser sensors (found in most office mice
