Survival mode is your resolution now

Survival mode is your resolution now.

When you have a newborn or are in the middle of moving, your resolution should probably just be to survive and do the bare minimum. That’s not giving up — that’s matching your expectations to reality.

I’ve been through both. Trying to stick to a new habit while sleep-deprived or buried in boxes is a fast track to feeling like a failure. Your brain is already running at 20% capacity. Adding “learn Spanish” or “work out daily” on top of that is cruel.

Instead, pick one tiny thing that feels almost laughably easy — and even that might fall off some days. Drink one glass of water in the morning. Step outside for one minute. That counts. The rest of your list? It’s on hold until the transition settles, and that’s fine.

Be honest with yourself: this isn’t the time to build new systems. It’s time to use all your energy just keeping the old systems from collapsing. When things stabilize — say, three months post-birth or one month post-move — then you can reassess and restart your real resolution. Until then, give yourself a pass.

This is a season, not a failure.
