Swap winter wipers and check your coolant before April.

Yes — do those two things and you’ll avoid most spring surprises.

Winter wiper blades take a beating from ice and road salt. By spring they’re usually streaking or chattering. Just replace them. It’s a $20 fix and you’ll thank yourself during the first April downpour.

Coolant (antifreeze) doesn’t last forever. After a cold winter, it can be low or acidic. A quick check of the reservoir and a test strip from any auto parts store tells you if it’s still protecting your engine against summer heat. Overheating is a spring problem nobody plans for.

Bonus: pop your hood and look at the battery terminals for corrosion. Winter kills weak batteries, and May is a terrible month to get stranded.

Do those three things and your car will be ready for the season.
