Syd Barrett’s final original song for Pink Floyd is “Jugband Blues,” the closing track on their 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets. It’s the only song on the record written entirely by Barrett, and it captures his unraveling mental state in real time—lyrics like “I’m most obliged to you for making it clear that I’m not here” feel like a resignation letter.

The recording session was tense. Barrett brought in a Salvation Army brass band, partly as a genuine musical idea and partly because he wanted to see what would happen when they played without direction. The chaotic, wandering arrangement mirrors his own disintegrating grip on the band. It was his last meaningful studio moment with Pink Floyd; shortly after, the group effectively fired him, and David Gilmour took over as guitarist. “Jugband Blues” remains a haunting, disjointed goodbye.
