Pink Floyd’s first television appearance wasn’t on a primetime pop show — it was a BBC arts program called The Look of the Week, filmed on May 12, 1967, and broadcast two days later. The host, Hans Keller, a classical music critic, clearly had no idea what to make of the band or their spacey psychedelic sound. But the real head-scratcher came when he turned to Syd Barrett.

Keller asked Barrett what the group’s “fundamental approach” was.
