Synthetic foam mousepad bases last longer.

Yes, synthetic foam bases are typically more durable than natural rubber ones.

Natural rubber is fine at first, but it’s organic. Over time it can dry out, crack, or lose its grip, especially if you live somewhere hot or humid or leave your mousepad in direct sunlight. It’s also more prone to developing a permanent “crunchy” edge where it meets the desk.

Synthetic foam—usually neoprene, EVA, or some other closed-cell blend—doesn’t have that problem. It stays flexible, maintains its shape, and doesn’t degrade from sweat or UV exposure the same way. It’s also less likely to smell like a tire after a few months.

The tradeoff is feel. Some people prefer the plush, grippy nature of natural rubber. But if you’re asking about durability only—go synthetic.

Don’t overthink this unless you’re speedrunning a mousepad collection.
