Take a photo, then let it go.

The best way to handle sentimental clutter in a small home is to separate the memory from the object by taking a picture and donating or discarding the physical item.

The thing is, the memory isn’t actually in the object. It’s in your brain. That gift from your aunt isn’t her love—the love was the act of giving. The souvenir isn’t the trip—the trip was the experience. The physical thing is just a trigger, and a photo works just as well as a trigger. Better, actually, because you can actually see it on your phone without digging through a box.

For small homes, this is non-negotiable. You don’t have room for a “memory box” that grows every year. Take the photo, create a folder on your phone labeled “memories,” and then give the item away. If you’re feeling guilty about gifts, remember: nobody wants you to live cluttered. The giver wanted you to feel something, not store something.

You’ll be surprised how little you miss the stuff. Future You will thank Current You for the extra shelf space.
