Take the floats out. Your future self will thank you.

You can leave pool floats in the water overnight—chlorine won’t eat through them in one night. But over a summer, it will turn that nice firm vinyl into something brittle and sticky.

Chlorine is an oxidizer. It attacks the plasticizers that keep vinyl flexible. Add in UV rays and the fact that water gets into tiny scratches, and you’ve got a slow chemical breakdown. A float that lives in the pool 24/7 might survive one season. One that gets pulled out after each swim can last several.

If you’re really not going to bother, at least flip them over in the morning so the sun isn’t blasting the same side all day. But honestly, pulling them out takes two minutes and doubles their life. Not a bad trade.
