Technically possible, practically a nightmare.

It is possible, yes. You can desolder the existing BGA RAM chip, reball a larger chip, and solder it on — if you have the right equipment and skills. But the risks are brutal.

First, the new chip has to be electrically compatible — same protocol, same voltage, same pinout but with more capacity. That’s rare. Most laptops/phones have soldered RAM configured at the board level, not just the chip. Even if you find a compatible chip, the memory controller might not recognize it without firmware changes.

Second, you can easily destroy the motherboard. One wrong temperature, one lifted pad, one tiny solder bridge — and the board is trash. Reballing requires precise hot air or IR rework, and most people don’t have it. Plus, the chip itself is expensive and often non-returnable.

Third, even if you succeed, stability is questionable. Memory timing training may fail, or you’ll get random crashes. Only attempt this on a cheap, disposable device where you’re okay with 90% chance of bricking it.

Don’t try this to save money on a laptop upgrade. Better to buy a model with the RAM you need from the start.
