Terrapin Point closes for winter ice.
It’s not open year-round. The platform sits right at the edge of the American Falls, and when ice builds up, it becomes unsafe. You’ll usually find it closed from November or December through March or April, depending on how bad the winter is.
The ice isn’t just a nuisance — it can make the walkways slippery, and chunks of ice fall from the falls. The park takes it seriously and won’t reopen until the conditions are safe. Sometimes that means a late April opening.
If you’re planning a winter trip to Niagara Falls, you can still see the falls from other spots (like the observation tower or Prospect Point). Just don’t bank on Terrapin Point being accessible.
Check the park’s conditions page before you go if you’re visiting when it’s cold.
