That DSOTM reject became the centerpiece of Wish You Were Here.

The unreleased track was a piano piece called “The Violent Sequence” — it later became “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”.

The band originally wrote it for Dark Side of the Moon, but it didn’t fit the album’s sound. Too melancholy, maybe. It sat on the shelf for a couple years until they needed a long, emotional opener for Wish You Were Here. They reworked it, added the iconic four-note guitar riff, and it turned into the 26-minute tribute to Syd Barrett.

So if you listen to “Shine On” and hear echoes of Dark Side, you’re not wrong. That’s where the DNA came from.
