That Kashmir vocal echo? A stairwell at Headley Grange.
The huge, cathedral-like reverb on Physical Graffiti’s vocals—especially on “Kashmir”—was recorded in the hallway and stairwell of Headley Grange, the band’s rented country house.
Headley Grange had famously live acoustics (it was originally a poorhouse, not a studio). The band set up a microphone at the bottom of the stairwell and Robert Plant sang from halfway up, using the natural stone echo instead of artificial reverb. No plate, no chamber—just a house with good bones.
That “unusual” location is exactly why so much of that album sounds alive and slightly spooky. They weren’t trying to be clever; they just didn’t have a proper studio.
Sometimes the best gear is a really good hallway.
