That light on your extension cord is just a power indicator.

It’s a simple neon or LED bulb that tells you the cord is getting electricity — nothing more, nothing fancy.

The light is useful because it gives you a quick visual check. If you plug something in and nothing happens, you can look at the cord’s light. If it’s off, the problem is upstream (outlet, breaker, or the cord itself). If it’s on, the problem is downstream (the device or the cord’s connection). It also helps in dark corners or basements where you can’t see if the cord is live.

Some higher-end cords also have a light that indicates surge protection is working — that’s a different thing, usually marked “protected” or with a different color. But the little red or orange glow at the female end? That’s just “I’m alive.”

It’s a cheap, useful feature. No need to overthink it.
