The 1-Liter Lunch Box Fits Most People
Most adults should start with a 1-liter lunch box and adjust from there, because appetite alone is a terrible guide to sizing.
Appetite changes daily. The size of the food you actually pack doesn’t. So instead of asking “how hungry am I?” ask “what am I eating?” A sandwich, a snack, and a piece of fruit fits a 1-liter box easily. Soup or salad with a roll fits in 750ml. Rice bowls, hearty leftovers, meal prep with sides — you’re looking at 1.5 liters. Anything bigger and you’re basically carrying a mixing bowl to work.
Also, volume lies. A huge salad has the calories of a small sandwich, so don’t size up just because the box looks full. And a burrito will fit in a small box but won’t fill it — that’s fine. Use the empty space for fruit or yogurt.
If you finish lunch and still feel hungry every day, go up a size. If you’re throwing food away or forcing the last bites, go down. That’s the whole trick. And make sure it fits in your bag — a “perfect” size that doesn’t fit your backpack is worthless.
The right size is the one you finish without a tug-of-war.
