The 2023 'Dark Side of the Moon' Atmos mix vs the 2003 SACD — which surround version wins?

The most immediate difference between the two mixes is spatial philosophy. The 2003 SACD 5.1 mix (by James Guthrie) spreads the band across the front three channels and uses rears mostly for ambience, effects, and discrete vocal panning — very much “album in a room” with the occasional swirl. The 2023 Atmos mix (also supervised by Guthrie but engineered by Andy Jackson) is more theatrical: instruments float overhead, footsteps in “On the Run” circle the ceiling, and the heartbeat finally pulses from all directions instead of just the subwoofer.

The Atmos mix doesn’t just sound wider — it feels deeper. The quadraphonic roots are clearer here than in the 2003 version, which always played it safe. “Money” loses some of its original punchy dryness in Atmos, but “Us and Them” becomes a cathedral. If you love precision and old-school surround, the SACD still holds up. If you want to hear Dark Side move around you like a play, the 2023 Blu-ray is the one to grab.
