The 8GB + empty slot is usually the smarter buy.

The average cost difference is about $50–$100 more for the 16GB soldered model. But that’s not the whole story.

You’re paying a premium for RAM you can’t change later. The 8GB + slot version is usually cheaper upfront, and adding your own 8GB stick later costs maybe $20–$30. Total cost: less than the 16GB soldered option. Plus you get the flexibility to upgrade to 16GB or even 24GB later.

Some brands gouge harder on the soldered configuration (looking at you, Apple), but even on Windows laptops the pattern holds. Unless the price difference is under $30 and you never want to open the laptop, go with the slot.

Future you will thank present you for not locking in at 16GB.
