The Altered Photo on the Rolling Stones' 1967 Compilation 'Flowers'

The cover of the 1967 US-only compilation Flowers is a weird time capsule. It uses a black-and-white photo from the same Gered Mankowitz session that produced the cover of Between the Buttons, but someone in the art department went wild. The band’s faces are tinted in lurid colors—Mick’s a sickly green, Keith’s a clownish red—and the whole thing is plastered over with a psychedelic flower collage. The background doorway from the original shot was replaced with a burst of blooms.

The result looks less like a Rolling Stones album and more like a poster for a head shop. The band reportedly hated the compilation (it was cobbled together without their input to cash in on their US hit “Ruby Tuesday”), and the cover just adds to the cheap, rushed feel. But in a weird way, it captures the exact moment the Stones were stumbling out of their mod phase and into something gaudier—whether they liked it or not.
