The Babyface-Produced Track on the Rolling Stones' 'Bridges to Babylon'

The song is “Anybody Seen My Baby?” — the lead single from Bridges to Babylon. R&B hitmaker Babyface co-produced it along with the band, marking one of the few times the Stones brought in an outside producer with no rock pedigree.

The track stands out immediately. Instead of Keith Richards’ usual snarling riffs, the foundation is a looped hip-hop beat and a smooth, crooned vocal from Mick Jagger. The chorus hook is almost pop-R&B, a world away from “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” It even borrows the melody from k.d. lang’s “Constant Craving” (which got her a co-writer credit after the similarity was pointed out). The result is a polished, radio-friendly Stones — one that split fans, but proved they were still willing to experiment with late-90s production trends.
