The best commute lunch is a food jar, not a bento box.

A wide-mouth insulated food jar is the best lunch box for eating on a train or bus, because it keeps food hot and won’t spill no matter how the bus lurches.

Bento boxes look great on Instagram, but most aren’t sealed. You get curry in your laptop bag and a sad pile of rice in the corner of the container. Not worth it. An insulated jar with a screw-on lid and a narrow opening means you can hold it in one hand and eat directly out of it with a spoon. No tray, no lap table, no disaster. Thermos makes the classic, but any brand with a wide mouth and a rubber gasket works.

For cold food like salads or sandwiches, skip the multi-compartment stuff. Get one solid leakproof container with a silicone seal and locking clips. It needs to sit in your bag sideways and come out dry. Glass is too heavy for a commute, so go with a food-grade plastic or stainless steel exterior.

Also, avoid containers that make you assemble or cut things on the train. You don’t want to be that person juggling a knife on a moving subway.

Your commute is not a picnic. Get something that survives being thrown in your bag and eaten standing up.
