The best hot lunch box isn’t a lunch box.

The best way to keep pasta or stew hot until noon is a vacuum-insulated food jar, not a lunch box.

Soft lunch boxes with a heat pack are fine for keeping things warm for an hour. But by noon, that burrito is lukewarm at best. A vacuum-insulated jar, on the other hand, traps heat properly. That’s why the classic Thermos still wins. Get one with a wide mouth so you can spoon out stew or scoop pasta without making a mess.

The trick is to preheat it. Fill the jar with boiling water, close it, wait five minutes, dump the water, then load your hot food. Fill it all the way to the top — empty air is the enemy. Do that and most good jars will still be hot at noon, even if you packed it at 7 AM.

Don’t overthink the brand. Thermos makes solid ones, and Stanley is right there too. Just make sure it’s actually vacuum-insulated and has a wide mouth. That’s the whole secret.

Now you can stop buying sad lukewarm soup at the cafeteria.
