The Canadian side is the better first-time visit.
Yes, for the classic postcard view of the Horseshoe Falls, you want to be on the Canadian side. The American side gives you a nice park and you can get close to the Bridal Veil Falls, but you’re mostly looking at the side of the big one. The Canadian side has the full front-on view, plus the tourist strip with everything from casinos to chain restaurants. It’s more crowded and commercial, but that’s part of the experience for a first-timer.
The US side (Niagara Falls State Park) is quieter and more natural—you can walk along the gorge trails, feel the mist on the Cave of the Winds deck. It’s a better experience if you want to avoid the carnival atmosphere. But if you’ve never been and only have one day, go to Canada.
Go see both if you have time. Just know which experience you’re choosing.
