The cartoonist behind the Stones' 'Sucking in the Seventies' cover

The cover of the Rolling Stones’ 1981 compilation Sucking in the Seventies is a caricature-heavy cartoon drawn by Gerald Scarfe. He’s the same British illustrator who later designed the animated sequences for Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and his style — jagged, grotesque, vaguely menacing — was a perfect match for the band’s unvarnished late-70s image.

Scarfe’s cover shows the Stones as exaggerated figures: Mick Jagger with overblown lips, Keith Richards with a cigarette dangling, Charlie Watts looking like a skeleton in a suit. The compilation itself was a cash-in release, but the artwork has aged into one of the more memorable band cartoons of the era.
