That rougher texture that gives you more friction also catches dust, oil, and dead skin more easily. Over time, the cloth or coating on that side starts to flatten or fray—especially around the edges where your arm rests. The speed side is usually a slicker, harder surface (think plastic or hard-coated fabric) that doesn’t break down as fast.
I’ve had a few dual-surface pads. The control side always starts feeling less “controlled” after a few months—glide gets uneven, sometimes even sticky. The speed side stays consistent until you replace the whole pad.
