The Cut Animation: Original Length of 'Another Brick in the Wall Part 2' in The Wall Film

Gerald Scarfe’s original animated sequence for “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2” was designed to run roughly 10 minutes—not the 2-minute snippet that appears in the finished 1982 film. Scarfe storyboarded a dark, surreal montage of schoolchildren marching in lockstep, then dropping into a meat grinder to be turned into featureless sausages. Director Alan Parker and the band ultimately decided the extended sequence was too graphic and slowed the song’s pacing.

The cut material ended up on the editing room floor during post-production, though some of the grinder imagery survives in other parts of the film. A few stills and storyboards of the unused footage later appeared in the The Wall art book. That original 10-minute version has never been officially released, but bootlegs of Scarfe’s animatics occasionally surface among collectors.
