The most surreal moment in Pink Floyd’s history happened in June 1975, not 1974, but the sessions for Wish You Were Here stretched over several months in late 1974 and into 1975. Syd Barrett’s surprise visit occurred on June 5, 1975, while the band was mixing “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”—a song they wrote as a tribute to him. He walked into Abbey Road Studios looking completely different: overweight, with a shaved head and eyebrows, so no one recognized him at first. David Gilmour later said it took several minutes before someone realized it was Syd.

The timing was eerie because the lyrics they were working on explicitly addressed Syd’s decline: “Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.” He reportedly sat in the control room, nodded at the band, and then wandered off. He asked if he could play on the track but didn’t seem to connect it was about him. That single visit—the last time any of them saw him—forever tied the album’s themes of absence and loss to a real, flesh-and-blood ghost.
