The divided one-tier bento wins for five-day meal prep.
For prepping all five lunches on Sunday and grabbing one every morning, a leakproof single-tier bento with two or three compartments beats every stacked or fancy option.
The tiered boxes look great in Instagram posts, but they’re a pain for real meal prep. Two trays plus a band or clasp means more parts to wash, more things to break, and many of them aren’t microwave-safe. They also don’t stack neatly in a crowded office fridge, and if your top tier holds something saucy, it can leak down into the bottom tier on the walk to work.
A single-tier divided box solves all of that. Everything sits in one layer, the compartments keep your protein from drowning in the sauce and your crunchy stuff from getting soggy, and the whole thing goes in the microwave as one unit. Portion control is built in, which is honestly the whole point of bento. Just check for three things before you buy: an airtight lid, true microwave safety, and compartments that are actually sealed off from each other rather than just a shallow tray with ridges.
If you need a hot soup or stew alongside, get a small insulated jar as a companion piece, not a second bento tier. It reheats better and doesn’t domino into everything else in your bag.
The stacked boxes are prettier. They are not better at the job of being five lunches.
