The dressing well is the secret to crisp salad
A container with a separate dressing well — like the Sistema Salad To-Go — is the best way to keep a salad crisp until lunch. But the container is only half the trick.
Moisture is what kills greens. If you toss the salad in dressing in the morning, it’s sad and soggy by noon no matter how nice the box is. The point of a dressing well is simple: keep the wet stuff away from the leaves until you’re ready to eat, then pour and shake. Any container that does that will work, and there are cheap ones everywhere.
Two tricks matter more than the brand. First, spin your greens dry and put a dry paper towel on top of them — it absorbs condensation from the fridge. Second, keep wet ingredients like tomatoes, cucumbers, or shredded carrots either in a separate compartment or in a little snack bag. Wet vegetables sitting against lettuce all morning will turn it to mush even without dressing.
If you don’t want to buy a dedicated salad box, a normal Tupperware plus a small jam jar for dressing gets you the same result. But the purpose-built ones are like eight bucks and they make the whole thing easier.
Dressing on the side isn’t a preference. It’s a survival strategy.
