The five-second fix for brown lunch fruit

The easiest fix is a quick splash of lemon or lime juice over cut fruit before you snap the lid shut.

Browning is just an enzyme meeting oxygen, and acid slows that reaction way down. You don’t need to drown the fruit — a light squeeze or toss is plenty. If you’re worried about it tasting like a sour candy, dilute the juice with a little water or brush it on instead.

A honey-water dip works too: one tablespoon of honey in a cup of water, soak the fruit for about 30 seconds, then drain. Same protection, mild sweetness. Salt water also does the job but it’s easy to overshoot and end up with salty apple slices.

Two more easy wins: cut fruit into big chunks instead of thin slices (less surface area, less browning), and use an airtight container. Oxygen is the other half of the problem.

Don’t stress too much if it still browns a little. It’s cosmetic, not spoilage. But if your kid refuses to touch “gross” brown apples, the citrus trick takes five seconds and costs basically nothing.
