The Helinox Chair Zero wins (barely)

The Helinox Chair Zero is the best portable picnic chair for easy setup and carrying. It’s not the only good option, but it nails the balance between weight, packability, and actual comfort better than anything else I’ve tried.

Helinox figured out how to make a chair that’s just over a pound, packs down smaller than a water bottle, and sets up in about 10 seconds. You pull it out of the bag, unfold the frame, slide the seat fabric on, and sit. That’s it. No wiggling, no fighting with poles.

The catch: it’s expensive (around $120) and the seat is low to the ground. If you have bad knees or want to sit at a table, look at the Helinox Chair One instead—same setup, slightly heavier, higher seat. Or if “carrying” means you’re hiking miles, the Crazy Creek Original is even lighter and packs flat, but it’s more of a backrest than a chair.

For park hangs, beach days, festivals, and car camping where you walk more than 50 feet from your trunk: get the Helinox. For backpacking: get the Chair Zero or a Crazy Creek. Anything else is either too heavy, too bulky, or takes too long to assemble.

Don’t overthink this one. Just get the Helinox. Future you will appreciate not wrestling with a bag chair while everyone else is already sipping their drink.
