The Houston 1981 Show Where Jagger’s Drug Bust Taunt Nearly Killed the Tour

The 1981 Rolling Stones tour was already a giant machine—huge stadiums, tight security, and a band riding high on Tattoo You. But in Houston on November 23, things almost came to a screeching halt when Mick Jagger decided to pick a fight with the local police.

During the show at the Astrodome, Jagger noticed cops hauling fans away for smoking pot. Instead of letting it slide, he grabbed a mic and thanked the Houston Police Department for “looking after the pot smokers.” The taunt was playful, but the HPD didn’t see it that way. Officers immediately threatened to arrest Jagger and shut down the rest of the tour unless the band apologized and cut the provocation.
