The Lap Steel Guitar on 'A Pillow of Winds' and How It Was Recorded
For the dreamy slide part on Meddle’s “A Pillow of Winds,” David Gilmour didn’t use his usual Stratocaster. He picked up a vintage National lap steel guitar, a resonator instrument with a metal body that gives a warm, bell-like tone. It’s one of the few Pink Floyd tracks where Gilmour plays a steel guitar, lending the song its floating, almost Hawaiian flavor.
