The Learjet and QSound in Pink Floyd's 'Learning to Fly'

The cockpit recordings on “Learning to Fly” came from an actual Learjet 35A — the band had an engineer tape the audio during a real flight, capturing the pilot’s callouts and the ambient hum of the cabin. That raw material became the song’s opening announcement: “No cause to worry… we’re going to take a little flight.”

To make those sounds feel like they’re moving around your head, the band used QSound, an early binaural processing system that simulates three‑dimensional space by filtering signals differently for each ear. Instead of just panning left and right, QSound creates the illusion of sounds coming from above, behind, or at a distance — a trick that matches the song’s airborne theme perfectly.
