The London Symphony Orchestra's 2015 Tribute 'The Wall' and the Deep Cut They Resurrected

In 2015, the London Symphony Orchestra put out a full-orchestra tribute album called Pink Floyd: The Wall – A Classic Rock Tribute. It’s exactly what it sounds like: the entire The Wall album played by a symphony, with a few guest vocalists and rock instrumentalists filling in the parts. It’s not an official release, but it’s one of the more thorough orchestral covers of that record out there.

The interesting bit is the tracklist. Instead of just running the standard album songs, they included “When the Tigers Broke Free”. That’s the song Roger Waters wrote for the film that describes his father’s death in World War II. It wasn’t on the original The Wall LP but appeared on the film soundtrack and later on the Echoes compilation. It’s a lesser-known piece even by Wall deep-cut standards, and including it gives the tribute a more complete narrative arc.
