The lunch box is not the point

The best meal prep system is boring: cook once, pack each day’s lunch into its own shallow glass container, and forget about “lunch boxes” entirely. The container is the system.

The trick is the shape. Tall deli containers waste fridge drawer space and topple over. Short rectangular containers — the 3-cup size from Glasslock or Pyrex is the sweet spot — slide flat into a standard fridge drawer and fit right into any basic insulated bag the next morning. Just measure your drawer first; most are around 3-4 inches tall, so keep containers under 2.5 if you want them to sit flat instead of stacking.

Glass over plastic, every time. It microwaves evenly, doesn’t absorb curry smell, and the lids lock tight enough that soup won’t redecorate your bag. Heavier? Slightly. Worth it when you’re not eating tomato-stained Tupperware in April.

The insulated bag you already own is fine. Pack Sunday, grab Monday, done.
