The Nassau Coliseum 'Comfortably Numb' Solo – Gilmour's Melodic Variation

The February 27, 1980 show at Nassau Coliseum – later released on Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live 1980-81 – captures a famously different take on the second solo in “Comfortably Numb.” Instead of the album version’s slow, ascending bend-and-sustain over the A minor chord, Gilmour plays a rapid descending pentatonic run, sliding down from a high G into a low, held E note that hangs almost defiantly before resolving.

That specific melodic variation – a flurry of notes that drops through the scale rather than climbing – gives the moment a sense of urgency and resignation. It’s a bluesier, more aggressive line that contrasts with the studio cut’s dreamy, controlled climb. Many fans consider this solo Gilmour’s best live improvisation, and the change became a signature moment for the rest of the Wall tour.
