The night shift lunch is a graze, not a meal

Pack lunch for a night shift like you’re preparing for a grazing session, not a sit-down meal.

First rule: don’t pack a traditional lunch. A sandwich and chips at 3am feels wrong and leaves you sluggish. Your body doesn’t know what time it is, and it definitely doesn’t want to process a heavy meal while you’re supposed to be sleeping.

Pack 2-3 small things instead. One protein (hard-boiled eggs, cheese sticks, turkey roll-ups), one cold and crunchy thing (grapes, cut veggies, a small salad), one treat. Cold food wins because break room microwaves are a gamble, and reheated leftovers at 4am taste like regret.

Caffeine goes in the first half of your shift, not the second. Pocket it, don’t pack it. And please, no fish. Night shifts are long enough without being the person whose Tupperware empties the break room.

Pack it the night before. You will not have the brainpower to assemble anything when you’re waking up at 5pm. Future 6am you will be grateful.
