The one-shelf rule is brutal but effective.
The one-shelf rule works by limiting your book collection to exactly what fits on a single shelf — no exceptions, no stacking sideways. You keep your favorites. Everything else goes.
Here’s how to do it without feeling like a monster:
Pick the one shelf. Empty it. Now put back only the books you actually love, use, or would re-read. The rest — the ones you keep “just in case” or because you feel guilty — are out. It forces you to prioritize what matters. If a book doesn’t earn its spot on that one shelf, it doesn’t earn space in your life.
You can soften it: keep a “maybe” pile in a box for three months. If you don’t rescue it, donate it. But the rule is the rule. One shelf. No cheating with double rows or stacking. The constraint is the point — it makes you choose.
Future you will appreciate not having to dust around a pile of books
