The onion trick works — for a quick refresh

Yes, but only if your grill is already reasonably clean and you just want to lift stuck-on bits after cooking.

The onion method is real, but it’s not a deep-cleaning solution. You cut a white or yellow onion in half, spear it with a fork, and rub the cut side across a hot grill grate. The onion’s moisture turns to steam instantly, loosening food residue. The slight abrasion from the onion’s surface does the scraping.

It works best right after you’ve finished cooking, while the grate is still screaming hot. You’ll see sizzling and some gunk come off. It also leaves a faint onion flavor, which is fine if you’re about to cook something else (burgers, steak) — not great if you’re done for the night.

Does it replace a good wire brush or a scraper? No. For a crusty, neglected grate, an onion won’t cut it. But for a mid-session cleanup or when you don’t have a brush handy? Absolutely.

Keep a brush for the heavy lifting. The onion is a party trick, not a power tool.
