The paper towel trick is the real secret

Keeping a salad crisp until lunch is mostly about keeping the greens dry and the dressing far away from them.

Moisture is the enemy. Dressing wilts greens within minutes, sure — but so does leftover water from washing them. So dry your leaves well. Like, properly well. A salad spinner is worth the cabinet space if you eat salad regularly.

Beyond that, the three rules are: dressing on the side, greens loose, paper towel in the lid. If you have a container with a dressing compartment, use it. If not, a small jar or even a little plastic container works fine. Never pour dressing directly on the salad in the morning.

The paper towel goes either between the lid and the greens or at the bottom of the container. It soaks up condensation so the leaves don’t sit in their own humidity. It sounds like a grandma hack, but it works.

Pack sturdier stuff like tomatoes and cucumbers tight, but give the leafy greens some air. Overstuffing crushes them. And keep croutons, nuts, or cheese in a separate little baggy so they stay crunchy too.

A little air keeps the crunch.
