It was The Dark Side of the Moon that became Pink Floyd’s first album to hit number one in both the United States and the United Kingdom at the same time. The album reached the top spot on the UK Albums Chart on March 24, 1973, and then claimed the top of the Billboard 200 on April 28, 1973—so not quite the same exact week, but it was the first time the band ever held the top position in both countries during the same era.

Before Dark Side, Pink Floyd had only cracked the UK top ten with Meddle (#3) and Atom Heart Mother (#1 in the UK only). The album’s unprecedented commercial breakthrough also made it the first rock concept album to dominate globally, spending over 14 years on the Billboard chart.
