The Pink Floyd Sound.
That’s the full original name: The Pink Floyd Sound, formed in 1965. They dropped “Sound” pretty quickly, then later dropped “The” and the rest is history.
Two guys from the band, Syd Barrett and Roger Waters, were into American blues musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. They mashed the names together and tacked on “Sound” to make it clear they were a band, not just a guy named Pink Floyd.
It stuck around long enough to appear on some early posters and demos, but by the time they released their first single, “Arnold Layne,” they were just The Pink Floyd. By the second album, the “The” was gone too.
So if you’re looking for trivia points, “The Pink Floyd Sound” is the right answer. Just don’t expect anyone to be impressed unless you’re at a very specific pub quiz.
