The PlanetBox Rover is the lunch box to beat
The PlanetBox Rover is the best stainless steel lunch box if you want zero plastic and something that survives daily abuse. I’ve seen these things get dropped, thrown, and run over by a bicycle, and they come out dented at worst.
The trick with “stainless” lunch boxes is that most of them only have a steel body and a plastic lid or plastic clips. That defeats the whole point if you’re avoiding plastic. The Rover uses a magnetic stainless latch and a silicone seal. Silicone is not plastic — it’s food-grade, BPA-free, and doesn’t break down the way polycarbonate does.
LunchBots and ECOlunchbox make solid steel containers too, but their lids are where they cheap out. LunchBots are fine for home use but the lids don’t seal, so they’re not great for wet food in a backpack. The Rover seals properly and has compartments, so you’re not fiddling with four separate containers in the morning.
One honest caveat: the Rover is heavy. It’s solid steel. If your kid is in kindergarten, they’ll struggle with it. For older kids and adults, the weight is the price you pay for not eating plastic flakes.
Also check the paint. PlanetBox uses food-grade coatings on the colored models, but if you want zero risk, the bare stainless finish means nothing to worry about.
Your kid will still trade their sandwich, but at least the box will outlast them.
