The plate method beats carb counting for packed lunches

The plate method is the easiest way to pack a diabetic lunch: fill half the box with non-starchy vegetables, a quarter with lean protein, and a quarter with slow carbs.

Counting carbs is fine, but it’s annoying and easy to botch at 7am. The plate method gets you most of the way there without the math. The protein and fat slow down how fast those carbs hit your bloodstream, so you get fewer spikes and fewer crashes.

Concrete version: grilled chicken or tuna on quinoa with a pile of roasted broccoli. Leftover beef with black beans and peppers. Hard-boiled eggs with hummus and cherry tomatoes. Add something fatty — avocado, olive oil, a few nuts — because fat is your friend here. Just watch sauces and dressings; that’s where hidden sugar lives.

If you do like tracking, most people land fine in the 30–45g carb range per meal. But don’t stress it. Veggies, protein, slow carbs, repeat.

Your afternoon blood sugar will notice.
