The Real Street Kids on the Stoop in the Rolling Stones' 'Waiting on a Friend' Video

Director Michael Lindsay-Hogg wanted the stoop scene in the Lower East Side to feel unscripted, so instead of using child actors, he sent a production assistant into Tompkins Square Park to round up actual street kids hanging out there. The kids were paid $50 each for the day and told to just act natural — which meant they had no idea Mick Jagger and Keith Richards would eventually walk over and sit down with them.

During the shoot, the kids were reportedly more interested in goofing around than following direction. Lindsay-Hogg let them stay loose, even when one kid started picking his nose on camera. The band kept laughing between takes, and the final edit preserved that raw, lived-in energy. Afterward, the kids went back to the park with their cash — and, according to one crew member, a Polaroid with the band.
