The reclining mechanism matters more than the footrest.

Get one with a locking recline that lets you lay almost flat. The footrest is nice, but if the chair can’t hold position when you fall asleep, you’ll wake up folded.

Most beach chairs with integrated footrests are basically the same frame with different fabric. The key difference is the ratcheting system. Some have like 5 positions, others have infinite adjust. Go for at least 5 positions, including a near-flat one for napping. Test it in the store if you can — some cheap mechanisms slip under weight.

The footrest is usually a mesh sling that attaches to the front legs. It works fine. Just make sure it’s high enough that your legs are actually supported, not dangling. Most are low. If you’re tall, look for “high seat” models.

Also: weight matters. Chairs with footrests are heavier and bulkier. That’s fine if you’re driving to the beach. Not fine if you’re hiking a mile. Consider a carrying bag with shoulder strap — you’ll thank yourself.

The only other thing is cup holders, but that’s not napping.

A good beach nap is worth the extra ten pounds to drag it.
