The Rolling Stones’ 1995 European Voodoo Lounge leg: big stadiums, smaller setlists, and two new singles

The second European leg of the Voodoo Lounge tour (summer 1995) is where the Stones finally tested the album’s singles live. “I Go Wild” and “You Got Me Rocking” had been released as singles earlier that year but weren’t played until this leg — and even then, only sparingly. “You Got Me Rocking” became a semi-regular opener or early set piece, while “I Go Wild” got rotated in and out, often dropped after a few shows.

The bigger story is how the band adjusted the setlist between stadiums and arenas. In open-air football stadiums (which made up most of the leg), the setlist stuck to a predictable, greatest-hits-heavy formula — “Start Me Up”, “Brown Sugar”, “Satisfaction” — with maybe two or three Voodoo Lounge tracks. But in the smaller indoor arenas, like those in Germany or Scandinavia, they’d drop a few hits and slot in deeper cuts: “Live With Me”, “The Last Time”, and even “Shine a Light”. It was a rare chance for European fans to hear something beyond the radio staples, and the band seemed looser on those nights.
