Yes, if it passes the squat test, it works. A cover-up that doubles as a dress needs to be opaque enough, long enough, and cut loose enough that you can bend over without showing everyone everything.
Poolside cover-ups are often sheer, short, and clingy — great for lounging, terrible for wearing to lunch. If you want it to do double duty, look for something in a heavier fabric (cotton, jersey, or a thick knit) that hits at least mid-thigh. Hold it up to the light. If you can see through it dry, it’ll be see-through wet.
Also check the armholes. A cover-up that gaps too much will flash your sides. And check the neckline: too deep and you’re adjusting all day.
If it passes all that, you’ve got yourself a dress that happens to be swimsuit-friendly.
