The sun is the secret weapon for stained lunch boxes
Tomato and turmeric stains in a lunch box are beatable if you wash it immediately and then let the sun do the bleaching for you.
The fast move is what actually matters. As soon as you get home, rinse the container with hot water and scrub with dish soap. Tomato sauce is acidic and eats into plastic fast; turmeric is basically permanent dye once it dries. Ten minutes of soaking in hot soapy water prevents 90% of the drama.
For stains that still survive, make a thick paste of baking soda and water and spread it over the marks. Let it sit for half an hour, then scrub with a soft sponge or an old toothbrush. It’s mildly abrasive without scratching the plastic like steel wool will.
For turmeric specifically, the real trick is sunlight. Rinse the box, then leave it open in direct sun for a few hours. UV light breaks down the turmeric pigment. Sounds like a Pinterest hack, but it actually works.
If the smell is still hanging around after washing, close the empty box with a couple tablespoons of dry baking soda or a crumpled sheet of newspaper and leave it overnight.
If you pack tomato or turmeric every single day, just buy a glass container. It won’t stain, and you’ll never have to think about this again.
