The Unresolved Drowning of Brian Jones: Official Verdict, Builder Confession, and a Family's Crusade

The official story says Brian Jones drowned in his swimming pool on July 3, 1969, with a coroner’s verdict of “death by misadventure” fueled by alcohol, drugs, and asthma. But the most persistent theory points to Frank Thorogood, a builder who was renovating Jones’s home at Cotchford Farm. Thorogood allegedly confessed on his deathbed to having killed Jones, and many close to the case—including Rolling Stones’ driver Tom Keylock, who was present that night—hinted the death was a violent argument gone wrong. No charges were ever filed, and the inquest lasted only minutes.

Jones’s parents never accepted the official narrative. In the 1990s, they hired a private investigator and petitioned for a new inquest, arguing the original investigation was sloppy and that Jones had bruises inconsistent with a simple pool accident. They also pointed to the convenient disappearance of key witnesses and the strange timeline—the last person to see him alive, Anna Wohlin, claimed she pulled him from the pool only to watch him stop breathing under suspicious circumstances.
